Las Vegas Raiders: Open quarterback competition between Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell

After Gardner Minshew of the Las Vegas Raiders was benched, it will only be decided during the course of training week who will be the starting quarterback

With the Las Vegas Raiders, the role of starting quarterback seems to be open again.

After benching Gardner Minshew in Sunday’s blowout loss to the Denver Broncos, head coach Antonio Pierce said on Monday that the Raiders have yet to determine the starter for Week 6. The team will apparently continue this evaluation throughout the week.

Vic Tafur of TheAthletic.com reports that Minshew and Aidan O’Connell will compete for the starting spot in practice this week.

Minshew was given the starting role in training camp and started the first five games. However, the Raiders replaced him on Sunday after two interceptions, including a pick-six that returned Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain more than 100 yards.

Minshew, 28, has completed 71 percent of his passes for 1,014 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.

O’Connell was the Raiders’ starter for part of last season, going 5-5. After replacing Minshew on Sunday, he completed 10 of 20 passes for 94 yards and threw an interception.
