Defensive tackle Chris Jones has missed the start of training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs. The star defender is asking for an adjustment to his contract that is still in effect.
The Kansas City Chiefs will have to do without defensive tackle Chris Jones for the kickoff of training camp. The 29-year-old is seeking an adjustment to his remaining contract. This is reported by NFL insider Adam Schefter.
Jones’ contract expires after the upcoming season, and the defensive tackle would probably like to get an extension at an early stage with improved conditions. According to Schefter, however, the two sides are far from reaching a common denominator in negotiations.
Jones is considered the lynchpin of the Chiefs defence and has played for Head Coach Andy Reid’s team since 2016. Last season he recorded 15.5 sacks and collected two more in the playoffs.
Chiefs: Absence could cost Jones big money
For each missed day of practice at training camp, Jones must pay a $50,000 fine, according to the player framework agreement. If he misses all training sessions the total would be US$950,000.
Head Coach Andy Reid commented on the personnel matter during a press conference less than a week ago: “Jones will join us sooner or later. I’m counting on him.” Whether a new contract will be negotiated by then remains to be seen.
