Kansas City Chiefs: Chris Jones extension “just a matter of time”?

Good news for the Kansas City Chiefs? General manager Brett Veach’s latest comments raise hopes for a contract extension for defensive tackle Chris Jones

The Kansas City Chiefs had to do without Chris Jones during mandatory minicamp. The defensive tackle skipped practice because he is demanding a contract extension.

And things aren’t looking bad for Chris Jones. General manager Brett Veach told “SI.com” that the two sides were “in constant communication”: “We have great communication, and there’s a lot of time before camp. I have a good feeling about where we’ll be with Chris. We will celebrate the handing over of the Super Bowl rings, have a good time and then have a break.”

“I’m sure we’ll have great conversations from now until training camp starts and I’m looking forward to Chris being here, not just for next year, but for a long time,” Veach said.

Chiefs-GM Veach expresses optimism

As of now, Jones is entering the final year of his four-year contract, which would pay him a base salary of about 19.5 million next season. A new contract would also make sense for the Kansas City Chiefs, as it would allow the franchise to lower the 28-year-old’s cap hit.

“We have a long history together, and we have a good relationship with his agents,” Veach said. “These things are usually sorted out just before or during training camp. We expect that to be the case and we’ll see how it goes.”

It seems fans of the reigning Super Bowl champion should look forward to more years with Chris Jones at Arrowhead Stadium.
