Kansas City Chiefs about to move? State of Kansas clears the way

The Kansas City Chiefs’ relocation continues to take shape. The state of Kansas has now cleared the way for that very move from Missouri

The Kansas City Chiefs have been toying with a move for months.

The state of Missouri, where Kansas City is located, recently voted against tax relief for the Chiefs in a referendum. This did not go down well with the franchise. “We will keep all our options open,” said owner Clark Hunt recently.

Now another step has been taken towards relocation: the state of Kansas, where the Chiefs are sometimes mistakenly located, has given its green light for investments to lure the Chiefs across the state border.

Both the Super Bowl champion and MLB team Kansas City Royals are slated to build on the Kansas side of the state line. KC is right on the border between Missouri and Kansas. “The state is poised to be a leader in professional sports,” said Republican Gov. Laura Kelly.

That didn’t go down too well with the current home of the two teams. “This is all about negotiating power,” said Mayor Quinton Lucas. The Chiefs are therefore prepared to invest up to 750 million dollars in a new stadium.

The Arrowhead Stadium, current home of the Chiefs, is located around 15 kilometers from the state border. Both the Chiefs and the Royals are still contractually bound to Missouri until 2031.
