Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is being sent home early by the Cleveland Browns, according to a report from practice. Previously, the player stated that it is almost certain he will not return to the franchise next season.
The Cleveland Browns sent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney home from practice on Friday after the 29-year-old told “Cleveland.com” he is 95 percent certain he will not play for Cleveland next season. NFL pundit Ari Meirov reports.
Clowney’s contract expires after the season, so the player will become a free agent again in March. The pass rusher only signed a new one-year deal in Ohio for about $11 million before the season.
The franchise apparently drew direct consequences after the player’s statements came to light and unceremoniously kicked Clowney off the squad before the final game of the season.
Jadeveon Clowney: First overall pick once again seeks new team
Clowney was drafted as the No. 1 pick by the Houston Texans in 2014, but rarely lived up to the high expectations placed on him.
After stints with the Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans, he landed with the Browns in 2021. This season he recorded a meagre two sacks and one forced fumble in twelve games.
Over his career, Clowney has 320 total tackles, 43 sacks, 13 forced fumbles and one interception in 109 games. He scored a return touchdown a total of four times in his career.
