Jacksonville Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence puts his foot down in the running back dispute

The Jacksonville Jaguars are still not calm. After a public debate has arisen over running back James Robinson, rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence is now weighing in, jumping to his teammate’s side.

Munich – It’s not an easy season for the players of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The franchise is in complete upheaval, the team around quarterback Trevor Lawrence and new coach Urban Meyer still hasn’t really found itself. Nevertheless, the Jaguars have some young talents in their ranks who show their skills every now and then.

One of them is running back James Robinson, who recently had to deal with fumble problems. As a result, he was benched by Head Coach Meyer for a majority of the games, which weakened the offense considerably.

Trevor Lawrence calls for more playing time for Robinson

Because the run game has flourished little without its engine, Meyer now received criticism from his quarterback. “The fact of the matter is James is one of our best players, so he should be on the field consistently,” Lawrence told “ESPN.”

Because Robinson fumbled against both the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams, he found himself on the sidelines for at least 16 consecutive plays. With backup running back Carlos Hyde making little of his opportunities, it does beg the question of why Meyer would voluntarily give up such an important player as Robinson.

“In the end, if you get benched, it’s your own responsibility. When you drop the ball, you get on the sidelines for a couple of plays. It’s not about one player, it’s about every team member,” Meyer explained his decision.

The statement seems questionable because backup Hyde also fumbled against the Rams. Unlike Robinson, however, the veteran was already back on the field in the next tackle. While Robinson has 887 yards and seven touchdowns this season, Hyde has just 310 yards and one touchdown.

Urban Meyer stands out for inconsistency

In fact, this is not the first time Meyer has peddled contradictory statements regarding Robinson. For example, he stated that the reasons for Robinson’s place on the bench also had to do with his recent injury problems.

At the same time, he let the 23-year-old back on the field against the Los Angeles Rams in the closing minutes, although he was visibly battered and the game had long since been decided. “I really should have rested. I have no idea why I was still playing,” Robinson said in surprise after the Rams game.

Meyer, on the other hand, dismissed responsibility. “Good question. It’s up to the running backs coach to decide who plays that position and when,” the longtime college coach explained. With Robinson, as with the rest of the offense, the 57-year-old has major problems getting the players’ talents right.

Voices were already being raised upon Meyer’s arrival in Jacksonville that he wouldn’t consider Robinson the ideal running back for his system. It’s fitting that the Jaguars spent another first-round pick on running back Travis Etienne after Lawrence, but he suffered a serious injury early in the season and has been out since.

The next few games will show whether Meyer complies with his quarterback’s wishes and uses Robinson more. If not, his time in Jacksonville is certainly not likely to get any easier.
