Following his comments on the running back debate, Colts owner Jim Irsay is making headlines again with a surprising revelation.
In an interview with “ESPN”, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay made a surprising admission about Jonathan Taylor’s contract situation.
The 64-year-old said the team has not had any talks with its star running back about a new contract.
“We think highly of [Jonathan] as a person and as a player. It’s all about timing. When it’s time for you to get paid, you get paid,” Irsay said.
The remarks come a day after Irsay took to Twitter to weigh in on the simmering debate over ball carrier pay, accusing proponents of changing the collective bargaining agreement of “bad faith. “
His comments had been seized upon as criticism of Taylor, who was reportedly particularly upset about the situation in a video conference of key running backs.
The 24-year-old is about to enter his fourth season in the NFL. In 2021, he had led the entire league with 1811 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns, which earned him second place in the Offensive Player of the Year voting and a spot on the All-Pro team.
Taylor opts not to holdout
Last year, however, he was out for six games due to injury, while the Colts missed the playoffs by a wide margin with a record of four wins, 12 losses and one tie.
The messed-up 2022 season is considered a major reason the 2020 second-round pick decided against a holdout at Indy’s recently launched training camp.
Taylor’s contract expires after next season. The Colts, however, could franchise tag him three straight times, greatly diminishing his chances of getting a long-term contract and decent pay.
