Indianapolis Colts: Anthony Richardson impresses at training camp

Anthony Richardson is obviously cutting a fine figure at the Indianapolis Colts’ training camp. Wide receiver Josh Downs is intrigued by the rookie quarterback’s arm strength

With the fourth pick in the 2023 draft, the Indianapolis Colts selected Anthony Richardson.

The quarterback has since completed his first sessions at training camp – and made a powerful impression on at least one teammate.

Josh Downs, who went to the Colts one day after Richardson in round three, is definitely impressed with his passer. “He gives a quick twist of his wrist and the ball flies 60 yards,” Downs is quoted as saying on the Colts website.

In Friday’s previous practice, Richardson, who took all the snaps with the first-team offense, set up receiver Alec Pierce for a strong touchdown on seven-on-seven.

New Head Coach Shane Steichen was also pleased with the playmaker’s performance.

“The most important thing is that we don’t just stand there and sit back when there’s nothing available. They did a pretty good job of that along the lines of, ‘Oh, let’s run and create those plays because that’s how it’s going to be in the game,'” Steichen said.

Colts HC Steichen praises Richardson: “Really good job done “

However, the 21-year-old did not act without mistakes. For example, Richardson let himself get rattled by a blitz and threw a poorly placed ball in the direction of tight end Kylen Granson. Still, Steichen was pleased with the progress his quarterback showed.

“I think he did a really good job. We didn’t want him to take a step back because in the spring he worked all the days and then in the summer he was off. I don’t think he took a step back. He’s getting better and better and that’s the way we have to continue,” the former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator makes clear.

In training camp, Richardson splits snaps with Gardner Minshew. Who will ultimately start in week one of the regular season is yet to be decided. According to media reports, Richardson is more likely to be used.
