According to a report, the Houston Texans are not committed to a quarterback at position two of the 2023 NFL Draft. The team’s choice could come down to a defender
Actually, virtually the entire football world assumes the Houston Texans will use the second pick in this year’s draft on a quarterback.
But as NFL insider Peter King reports, citing a league source, it is far from certain whether the club will actually select a playmaker.
Depending on which quarterback the Carolina Panthers draft at number one, the Texans could decide against the position.
Will Anderson Jr. is considered a huge talent at the pass rusher position and would also be worthy of the first pick in the draft. The Texans would have to figure out how to evaluate the playmaker’s potential.
Houston with two first-round picks
The team could also select a quarterback with the twelfth pick, since it passed from the Cleveland Browns to the Texans in the Deshaun-Watson trade.
Originally, four playmakers were traded as potential first-round picks. While Will Levis reportedly had his value severely damaged by pre-draft talks with teams, Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson are still seen among the top talents.
With Young and Stroud in particular, there is debate over which of the two youngsters would be a better choice for the first pick in the draft.
Multiple teams with interest in quarterbacks
In addition to Carolina and Houston, the Indianapolis Colts are looking for a quarterback at number four.
The Las Vegas Raiders (pick 5) are also perennial candidates for a young playmaker.
So Houston could go empty-handed in the worst-case scenario if it doesn’t select a quarterback at position two.
