DeAndre Hopkins moves from the Tennessee Titans to Kansas City. The Chiefs get a star receiver relatively cheaply, as the numbers of the trade show.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday.

In return for the star receiver, the Titans received a fifth-round pick in the draft, which will become a fourth-round pick if the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl and the 32-year-old is on the field for at least 60 percent of all snaps.

So the Chiefs have made a good deal. With Hopkins as the new receiving target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City team is underlining its role as favorite this season.

And the numbers for the Hopkins trade also suggest that the Chiefs got a real bargain.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, Hopkins is due $13.7 million this season. The Titans have already paid for the bulk of that, and the receiver from Tennessee will receive an additional $2.5 million from Tennessee as a signing bonus as part of the trade.

This means the Chiefs only have to pay Hopkins $3.2 million for the remaining 11 regular season games and any potential playoff games.

For a player of Hopkins’ caliber, that’s really a good deal.
