The Cleveland Browns have now also officially terminated the contract with Odell Beckham Junior. In doing so, the remainder of his contract has been cancelled and his salary for the 2021 season will have to be covered by a potential new team. The outstanding amount brings difficulties.
Cleveland/Munich – While it had long been known that the Cleveland Browns and Odell Beckham Jr. would go their separate ways, it took until Saturday for the official release.
Now, the wide receiver’s contract has finally been terminated, with both sides agreeing, among other things, that OBJ will not collect any severance pay for the time being.
In addition, the contract was restructured on a few levels.
Odell Beckham Jr. team must cover salary
So the remaining two years were removed from the contract, the only way Beckham could move onto the waiver list.
There, in a specific order, NFL teams now have a chance to file their claim on the 29-year-old. His new team would then have to cover his remaining salary for the 2021 season – US$7.25 million.
OBJ: Only nine teams are eligible
Problem: Only nine teams currently have enough cap space to take on that amount. These are the Jaguars, Eagles, Broncos, Seahawks, Panthers, Chargers, Steelers, Washington and the Bengals.
Should OBJ go through the waiver wire and no team “claims” him, the Browns will again have to pay a $4.25 million settlement.
Will Backham Jr. become a free agent after all?
Following that, the receiver becomes a free agent and can negotiate a new contract with any NFL team.
Given the large remaining salary that a franchise would have to take on, the latter scenario seems the more likely.
