This past offseason, the Browns traded for Deshaun Watson and gave him a fully guaranteed contract worth $230 million. Less than a year later, however, he is already expected to be restructured.
It wasn’t that long ago that the Cleveland Browns celebrated the arrival of their new quarterback.
Deshaun Watson would finally lead the Browns to their first Super Bowl in decades. The pay? 230 million dollars over five years, every penny guaranteed.
But with the sometimes acute money problems it has caused the Browns, they want to restructure Watson’s contract after less than a year.
Browns want to save tens of millions on stars
At least that’s what general manager Andrew Berry hinted at. “That’s one thing that could definitely be on the table with us,” the Browns general manager said on the sidelines of the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Watson is due about $55 million in 2023, as of now. Since the sum is fully guaranteed, that exact amount also encumbers the Browns’ cap space.
While Watson is not the only one the Browns want to save money on. The contracts of defensive end Myles Garrett and wide receiver Amari Cooper are also expected to be adjusted. Safety John Johnson has already been released.
Garrett will burden the Browns’ salary budget with 29.2 million dollars next year, Cooper with 23.8 million.
So currently these three players take up about half of the Browns’ salary cap space. It is not known whether negotiations on restructuring are already underway.
