The rumor mill surrounding Bill Belichick has been churning for a long time. Now his former quarterback Cam Newton is getting involved and bringing Belichick’s possible next stop into play: the Carolina Panthers.
What would have been unthinkable a few years ago is now absolutely probable: Bill Belichick is leaving the New England Patriots.
After around 20 years of success under the long-serving head coach, the Patriots currently have a 2-9 record. Only two teams in the league have more defeats. Belichick’s seat is more than just warmed up.
And after that? In addition to a possible career-ending move, the Los Angeles Chargers have recently been mentioned as a possible suitor for Belichick. Now his former quarterback Cam Newton, who worked under Belichick in the 2020 season, is bringing another team into the conversation: the Carolina Panthers, who recently parted ways with head coach Frank Reich.
Newton sees “second chance” for Belichick with the Panthers
On his own YouTube channel, Newton spoke of insider knowledge he wants. “From what I understand, David Tepper wants Bill Belichick,” the 2015 MVP asserted. “The opportunity is there and it would be a win-win-win situation.”
The Patriots would have a fresh start, just like the Carolina Panthers and Tepper, who has already burned six head coaches since taking over in 2019. It would also be a chance for Belichick to prove himself outside of New England, according to Newton.
“Tepper would give him everything he wants and everything he needs,” he believes. Belichick has not only controlled the playcalling in the Patriots’ defense for years, but has also taken on the duties of a general manager.
How reliable the information from the long-time Panthers quarterback is, however, remains to be seen. The only fact is that neither the Patriots nor the Panthers are happy at the moment
