A fundraiser by Damar Hamlin that was thought to be small raised about ten million dollars because the sympathy was so great when the Buffalo Bills safety’s life was in danger. Now he has decided what to do with the money.
Damar Hamlin goes among benefactors.
After the Buffalo Bills safety collapsed in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals last season and was subsequently in mortal danger, a total of around ten million US dollars was donated for his online fundraising campaign.
Donations of this magnitude were not expected. Hamlin had created a project in 2020 on the site “GoFundMe” to generate money that would be used to buy toys. These were intended for needy children.
2,500 US dollars was the goal, 10 million dollars has become it
The fundraising goal set was only $2,500. However, the sympathy was so great that fans from all over the world donated. Now Hamlin, a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has decided on the cause.
He will use the ten million dollars to fund his own non-profit organization, Chasing M’s Foundation.
“We have been very intentional and deliberate in taking time to properly set up my charity,” Hamlin said in a statement. “I look forward to sharing news about programs we’re developing to impact a generation of youth and give back to others.”
His own charity offers a big advantage over the previous status his online fundraiser held. “My charity does not face the challenges that the Giving Back Fund leadership faced,” Hamlin said in the statement, adding, “Donors are tax deductible. “
Expert believes Chasing M’s Foundation will be around for a long time
Experts take a positive view of Hamlin’s decision. While Lisa Delpy Neirotti, the director of sports management programs at the George Washington University School of Business, usually advises athletes to partner with large organizations rather than start their own.
In Hamlin’s case, however, it’s different, as she told “6abc.com,” “You can really put that large amount of money into an endowment that will last forever, long beyond his playing days.” Hamlin had declared in April that he wanted to return to the NFL.
