Buffalo Bills: Josh Allen has a Mahomes problem

Josh Allen is an outstanding quarterback until he runs into Patrick Mahomes, who steals the show. A comparison from soccer comes to mind. A comment.

Josh Allen really did everything he could to lead his Buffalo Bills to victory against the often overpowering Kansas City Chiefs. The quarterback ran into the end zone twice, completed 67 percent of his passes and threw a touchdown pass. In the end, it was all for nothing (once again).

He expressed his frustration accordingly in the press conference and said: “It sucks, losing sucks. Losing to them, losing to anyone at home at all, sucks.” Above all, it probably annoys him to repeatedly lose out to Patrick Mahomes of all people in important games

Buffalo has won three of the last five meetings with Kansas City – but not when it really mattered. The two playoff encounters ended in defeat – and thus with the end of the season.

Two years ago, the Chiefs already seemed to be defeated: In the Divisional Round, Buffalo took a three-point lead with 13 seconds left in the game. But Mahomes had enough time left to lead his team to field goal distance and ultimately to victory in overtime.

The fact that Allen had a strong game with 329 passing yards and four touchdown passes was of no interest to anyone afterwards. Mahomes was the beaming winner, Allen the frustrated loser. It was a similar story when the Bills lost again to the Chiefs.

And it is quite possible that this story will repeat itself more often.

Josh Allen has a similar problem with Patrick Mahomes as the German soccer goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has with Manuel Neuer: It’s not enough to be an outstanding man of your trade if you’ve had an athlete of the century in front of you for your entire career and only ever play “second fiddle”.

There are only six months between Allen and Mahomes

Allen could be even more affected because the age difference is smaller. After all, there are six years between the 37-year-old Neuer and the 31-year-old ter Stegen.

The FC Barcelona goalkeeper can at least hope to be in the spotlight or in goal for the German national team for a few more years once Neuer has retired (at least from the national team).

By contrast, there are only six months between the 27-year-old Allen and the 28-year-old Mahomes. So there is a good chance that Allen will be overshadowed by Mahomes for the rest of his career.

Especially since the two also play in the same conference. Would Allen have to move to the NFC to fulfill his dream of playing in the Super Bowl? He could do that, after all.

Ter Stegen can’t just move to another national team.
