There’s legal trouble between Lamar Jackson and Troy Aikman. The Ravens star is suing the Cowboys legend for trademark infringement
Quarterback superstar Lamar Jackson has apparently filed a lawsuit against Hall of Famer Troy Aikman for patent and trademark infringements. This was reported by “ESPN” with reference to several court documents.
According to the documents, Aikman attempted to use the word “EIGHT” on clothing and bags. According to Jackson, however, this violates his patent on the number eight. Both the Ravens star and the Dallas Cowboys legend own trademark rights to various versions of the number.
Aikman’s lettering would “likely cause confusion or mistake or mislead the buying public” as to whether they are purchasing products from Jackson or Aikman’s company, Jackson’s attorney said in the July 9 filing.
Specifically, the current MVP, through his attorney, has filed two complaints with the trademark office against FL101, a company that lists Aikman as one of its directors in SEC filings, objecting to its use of “Eight” on apparel and bags.
FL101 is listed as the owner of nine trademark applications for the use of “Eight” on a variety of consumer products, including beer, beach towels and energy drinks.
Jackson, in turn, has applied for trademarks for several uses of the number eight, including “Era 8 by Lamar Jackson,” “Era 8,” “You 8 yet?” and a logo featuring a “stylized wild dog” above a sign with “2018 Era 8 by Lamar Jackson 2018” around the dog.
Jackson’s attorney says his trademarks for these sayings were registered with the number before Aikman’s “Eight” and that Aikman’s company’s products are “very similar in sound, appearance, meaning and commercial impression” to Jackson’s marks.
For both Jackson and Aikman, the number eight holds special significance because of their careers, for both it was the only back number they wore in their careers.
