Robert Griffin III, former Baltimore Ravens quarterback, opened up on his own show about the difficult relationship between Joe Flacco and Lamar Jackson.
2018 Baltimore Ravens selected quarterback Lamar Jackson with the 32nd pick in the NFL Draft. The youngster was expected to be the long-term successor to the aging Joe Flacco.
The following season, however, not only Flacco and Jackson were under contract, but also veteran Robert Griffin III, apparently for good reason.
As “RGIII” explained in a short video on “X,” he took on the mentor role for the young Jackson: “It was funny in the quarterback room with Joe and Lamar because Joe was just leading by example but not really being a mentor. That was then my job.”
As the season progressed, however, Flacco took on a mentoring role for Jackson and gave him important tips in the passing game, Griffin III explained in another short video.
Flacco injured his hip on the tenth day of the season, Jackson took over and never relinquished the starter’s position – until now.
The following season, Flacco was traded to the Denver Broncos. The Broncos secured rookie quarterback Drew Lock during that offseason. Asked about a potential mentor role at the time, Flacco said, “I don’t care about developing other guys. I hope he does well. I don’t consider it my job to develop him. My job is to win football games for this team.”
Flacco most recently suited up for the New York Jets. He has not been under contract with any team since the end of last season.
