New York (SID) – The Miami Dolphins have to replace their next quarterback immediately after the tightening of the concussion protocol in the NFL. After the much-discussed injury to Tua Tagovailoa, Teddy Bridgewater was replaced in Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets (17:40).
The latter is the first NFL player to be removed from the game as a precautionary measure under the tightened rules. Bridgewater was hit hard early in the game and was visibly reeling afterward.
Bridgewater showed no symptoms of a concussion, said Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel, who called the new rule “a good thing.” Before Bridgewater can play again, he must go through the protocol, which includes being examined by an independent neurologist. With rookie playmaker Skylar Thompson out, the Dolphins lost quite handily.
It was only on Saturday that the league and the players’ union had agreed on the rule tightening: if a player has problems with balance, coordination or speech during a game, he is not allowed to return to the field. The trigger was, of all things, the injury to Dolphins quarterback Tagovailoa.
During the game against the Buffalo Bills, Tagovailoa was visibly hurt after a hard hit and stumbled, but continued to play. He also ran in the following game against the Cincinnati Bengals, then fell on the back of his head and suffered a concussion.
Meanwhile, Super Bowl winners Los Angeles Rams continue to find the season elusive, losing 10-22 to the Dallas Cowboys for the third time in their fifth game. The only unbeaten team is still the Philadelphia Eagles, who won 20-17 at the Arizona Cardinals.
The Detroit Lions and Amon-Ra St. Brown suffered a heavy defeat in the 29-0 loss at the New England Patriots. His brother Equanimeous St. Brown also lost with the Chicago Bears at the Minnesota Vikings with 22:29.
