The New York Jets and the entire NFL mourn the death of assistant coach Greg Knapp. Just six months ago, Robert Saleh, new head coach of the Jets, hired him as his quarterbacks coach.

24 years in the NFL, seven teams as a coach

Last week, “Knapper,” as he was affectionately known, was in a serious accident when he crashed his bicycle into a car in his California home. He succumbed to his serious injuries five days later.

Knapp entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 1986, in nine years he was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Raiders, never throwing a pass in the NFL.

After his career ended, he joined the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff in 1997. After stints with the Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos, Knapp landed on the New York Jets staff before this season, and was expected to work closely with designated Jets starting quarterback Zach Wilson in the soon-to-be-launched training camp.

Knapp’s greatest success came in 2015 when he won the Super Bowl as quarterbacks coach of the Denver Broncos. Knapp is survived by a wife and three daughters.
