AFC Championship Game: Indianapolis reportedly turned down NFL’s request to host at neutral site

The NFL is currently looking for options for the possible staging of the AFC Championship Game at a neutral venue. With the city of Indianapolis, one of the league’s alternatives has already definitively declined.

Following the decision by the NFL and its owners that the AFC Championship Game will be played at a neutral site under certain conditions, the search for possible venues is in full swing.

If one of three possible scenarios comes to pass, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will choose the venue for the game.

Indianapolis, meanwhile, as a possible option is probably already off the table. The Indianapolis Business Journal reports that the city has rejected the NFL’s request. However, it is not known whether Indianapolis was the NFL’s first choice or only one of several possibilities.

Indianapolis has scheduling conflicts with the booked Indy Convention Center, according to the report. A national volleyball tournament, expected to draw up to 30,000 visitors, will be held at the associated Lucas Oil Stadium.

The city expects a peak occupancy of more than 7,000 hotel rooms on the weekend of 28 and 29 January. Accordingly, Indianapolis was quick to respond to the league’s request that the Colts’ stadium not be available for the AFC Championship Game.
