Are the Green Bay Packers trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets for a first-round pick? A report now reportedly reveals the Jets’ offer. Plus, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst speaks out on the Rodgers case and contradicts the star quarterback.
Is the wait about to end? Apparently there are new developments in the case of the potential trade of Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets.
General manager Brian Gutekunst of Rodgers’ still-team Green Bay Packers announced that there is no concrete timetable for a deal, but the franchise is hoping for an agreement soon.
First-round pick for Rodgers?
As NFL insider Tom Pelissero reports, Gutekunst spoke in a small roundtable to representatives of various US media outlets and also revealed that, contrary to initial reports, the Packers will probably not necessarily claim a first-round pick in return for the star quarterback. Most recently, it was said that this demand was holding up negotiations.
Pelissero’s colleague Charles Robinson now reports that the current status is as follows: According to the report, the Jets are offering the Packers a second-round pick in 2023 and a second-round pick in 2024 that could turn into a first-round pick depending on performance.
There is one “catch” for the Packers, however, according to Robinson. According to the report, the Jets are demanding a pick back from the Packers should he not play in the 2024 season. But negotiations are apparently taking shape.
This is despite the fact that Gutekunst, speaking to the media, did not rule out the possibility of Rodgers playing for Green Bay again – even if the likelihood of this happening is correspondingly low. According to Gutekunst, “all options are on the table”, although it is definitely not in that direction.
Green Bay Packers had sought talks “many times “
The Packers GM also responded in a limited way to Rodgers’ made comments on the “Pat McAfee Show”, according to Pelissero. He said – unlike the quarterback – they tried “many times” to talk to Rodgers about returning to the Packers, but it never happened.
“After the offseason, you have a lot of conversations with everybody involved. That’s when you develop an idea of how and where the team is going. I was really looking forward to talking to Aaron to see what his role would be,” Gutekunst said, revealing, “We didn’t reach out to him and he didn’t respond either. “
Aaron Rodgers had a different feeling
In the end, Green Bay had to make the decision and Rodgers’ adviser said he wanted to go to the Jets.
So the GM contradicted Rodgers, who spoke out on the matter about a fortnight ago, claiming that he already felt during last season that the Packers wanted to trade him and start Jordan Love. Moreover, he didn’t feel during the offseason that the Packers wanted to negotiate with him about a future together.
