After quarterback Trey Lance was traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Dallas Cowboys, Lance is gushing about his new home.
After the 2021 draft, hopes were high in San Francisco that they had finally found their franchise quarterback of the next few years. After all, it cost the Niners three first-round picks to trade up to position three and select Trey Lance.
But Lance has only been able to play eight games in the past three seasons, in part because of several injuries. His injury last year, of all things, allowed third-string quarterback Brock Purdy to put up surprisingly strong performances, and Purdy will be the starter again this season.
Accordingly, it was clear that Lance would only compete for the backup role with Sam Darnold. Once Darnold was named backup, Lance’s time in San Francisco was over if a suitable trade partner could be found. that was found with the Dallas Cowboys.
“It didn’t go the way I expected it to go. It didn’t go the way a lot of people expected it to go. But I think everything happens for a reason,” the 23-year-old is combative. “I’m here for a reason. I want to find a way to help the new team “
Lance: Big smile on my face
In Dallas, Lance will have to learn a new offense under head coach Mike McCarthy and get used to the new environment behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. Still, Dallas was probably one of his preferred destinations: “I had a big grin on my face and I was really excited to get here. It was a little surreal for me to hear that I was coming here, to such a historic organisation,” the playmaker enthused.
“Coach McCarthy and the whole coaching staff have an unbelievable knowledge. It’s great for me. Kind of a breath of fresh air and meeting new guys.”
He has also met with starting quarterback Dak Prescott and wants to learn everything he can from the Cowboys’ veteran quarterback. Lance had nothing but admiration for him, too. “He won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. That alone shows what kind of person he is. “
