In the first preseason game, the San Francisco 49ers got off to a rocky start against the Las Vegas Raiders. Head coach Kyle Shanahan blames the entire offense

The San Francisco 49ers definitely have one of the more interesting quarterback rooms in the NFL with Brock Purdy, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold. All three have the potential to be starters. Accordingly, in the first preseason game of the Californians, which was lost with 7:34, the focus was also on the quarterback position.

Against the Raiders, Trey Lance was allowed to play the entire first half. In the end, Lance collected ten completions on 15 pass attempts and 112 yards. But it didn’t look like that at first.

With three consecutive three-and-outs, the start was more than poor. Head coach Kyle Shanahan, however, blames the entire offence for this and at the same time takes his quarterbacks in his stride.

Shanahan: Weak start

“It’s been a tough start for everybody,” the coach said in the interview. “I don’t blame Trey alone for that,” Shanahan continued. After that, at least things went better and Lance was able to compete a little more.

However, it probably looks like Purdy, last season’s rising star, will continue to start for the 49ers as his injury is fully recovered. The performances of the last pick (!) in last year’s draft, who only got playing time because Jimmy Garoppolo and Lance were injured, were too convincing.

Since Lance, as the third pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, also has undoubted potential and will probably have little interest in a backup role, rumours persist about a possible Lance trade. The Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are considered possible buyers.
