Broncos tackle Eyioma Uwazurike is suspended indefinitely for illegal betting. Investigations for criminal gambling will now follow.
News from Eyioma Uwazurike.
The Denver Broncos defensive tackle, who was suspended indefinitely last week for betting on NFL games in the 2022 season, is under investigation for criminal gambling.
According to the Des Moines Register newspaper, several Iowa prosecutors say a betting account controlled by Uwazurike was used to place 801 bets totalling more than $21,000.
This allegedly involved betting on both Broncos games and Iowa State games that the tackle himself attended.
According to the prosecution, the NFL professional allegedly bet on four Broncos games last season in which he himself did not play. But he also bet on a game against the Cardinals in which Uwazurike played 29 snaps and made two tackles.
What exactly the athlete is said to have bet on is not known.
Uwazurike faces legal consequences
In addition to the NFL’s consequences, he is also facing legal ones.
For example, prosecutors accuse him of scheming with another person to conceal his identity and manipulate mobile transactions to make it appear that bets were placed by the other person.
Uwazurike is currently part of an investigation involving other Iowa State athletes, including starting quarterback Hunter Dekkers.
The defensive tackle was drafted by the Broncos in 2022.
