Melvin Gordon: Running back is the worst position in the NFL

Running back Melvin Gordon is currently looking for a new team as a free agent. Meanwhile, the 30-year-old is struggling with his position, which he considers the worst in the NFL.

This player is far from happy with his position.

In an interview with “CBS Sports Radio”, Melvin Gordon stated that the running back position is currently the worst in the NFL. “It’s so hard for running backs right now,” he explained, “There are a lot of running backs out there, but we just don’t get any love. It’s literally the worst position to play in the NFL right now. It sucks.”

For a player in the best football league in the world to complain so publicly about his position is rather unusual after all. Meanwhile, recent history illustrates why Gordon feels this way.

Over the past decade in particular, running backs have lost value in the eyes of NFL teams. Players beyond the calibre of Christian McCaffrey or Derrick Henry are having a lot of trouble landing a well-paying contract

The background: Young and thus cheaper running backs often perform similarly to established names in the league. The often low cap space then ensures that teams often opt for the younger professionals.

A problem with which Melvin Gordon is currently struggling. The 30-year-old, who has already played for the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos, but was only part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad last season, is currently a free agent and looking for a team: “I just keep myself ready because I know what I can do. I still want to play. I just stay ready.”

In addition to Gordon, various high-profile and correspondingly high-priced veterans are currently on the market: Ezekiel Elliott, Dalvin Cook, Leonard Fournette and Kareem Hunt, for example – tough competition in the battle for a new team.
