The Baltimore Ravens land a real coup by signing star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The New York Jets, meanwhile, appear to have gambled big. One comment.
The Baltimore Ravens land a coup and give Odell Beckham Jr. a one-year contract worth up to 18 million dollars – especially the star wide receiver can feel like a winner!
For much more than the transfer itself, the amount of the salary initially caused open mouths among media and fans alike.
Only a few weeks ago, “OBJ” had denied the reports about his alleged salary demand of 20 million dollars per year. There was no truth in the rumours, but four million dollars a year would be far too little for him.
The negotiations were protracted and tough. It was said that the 30-year-old would have to take a massive pay cut, also because of possible concerns about his performance after returning from a torn cruciate ligament.
But persistence often just pays off. Beckham Jr. did everything right, successfully underpinning his continued high sporting value and not rashly signing a contract elsewhere.
Odell Beckham Jr: New York Jets hesitate and come up empty
The Ravens somewhat unexpectedly stumped the favored New York Jets with their deal. The receiver was supposed to travel to the city that never sleeps on Monday for in-depth talks and a direct medical check after his serious injury.
That has now come to an end, although it appears the Ravens deal could have been avoided. According to “SNY.tv”, “OBJ” reportedly told the Jets about the Baltimore offer on Saturday night and gave the franchise a chance to match the salary offered. “Gang Green”, however, apparently felt this was too much of a good thing.
Whether New York was altogether too sure and gambled away? At any rate, the assumption suggests itself. But perhaps they simply underestimated the urgency and are now left standing in the rain.
For even if the annual salary is substantial: The Jets are about to go all-in, “OBJ” would have been the next logical step.
The 2014 first-round pick has previously been credited with playing a significant role in New York’s courtship of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Talks between the two players are said to have taken place in series. However, no agreement has yet been reached with Rodgers either.
The Ravens took advantage of the developments in the “Big Apple” and vigorously intervened. In all likelihood, this was also done to save the relationship with quarterback Lamar Jackson.
So the signing of OBJ should pay off for the Ravens and the receiver alike.
