Under Lions coach Dan Campbell, former prodigy Jared Goff is really blossoming. He wants it to stay that way, if Campbell has his way. He doesn’t want to hear about another quarterback.

Jared Goff has the stamp of prodigy on many fans, selected first overall in the 2016 draft by the Los Angeles Rams but never quite making the big leap.

In the 2018 NFL season, the Rams faced the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl with quarterback Goff, which they lost 3-13. Without a scored touchdown under Goff.

Jared Goff: From prodigy to top player?

For the 2021 season, the Rams traded (among others) Goff for Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions. With Stafford, a Super Bowl triumph was achieved at the first attempt. Goff finished the season with only three wins with the Lions under the then new coach Dan Campbell. That made them the worst team in the NFL.

For many, it was only a matter of time before the Lions brought in a new QB who was more than mediocre. But under Campbell, Goff has been able to play up to his potential more and more, ranking among the top five quarterbacks in many stats (4,438 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, seven interceptions) this past NFL season.

Ahead of the upcoming season, Lions coach Campbell remains confident and also sees Goff as the reason for Detroit’s positive trend. “I feel really good about him at quarterback. I love Goff. He’s our guy. He’s proven over the last two years that he’s made for us. He’s had to put up with a lot and endure a lot, like a lot of us have. But for me, he played his best football last season and I think he will play at that level again next season. I feel comfortable with him. I love our quarterback situation,” he said, speaking to NFL Insider Tom Pelissero.

Of the past ten NFL games, the Lions have won eight. In the upcoming NFL Draft, the Lions have two first-round picks, even four picks among the first 55 selections. Despite the praise, Goff is entering his final year of his contract and is currently 29 years old. If Campbell means what he says and continues to back him, contract talks should be imminent.

Some pundits have floated the idea of trying for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, saying the Lions could afford it with their picks.

But Campbell doesn’t seem to want to know anything about that for now: “When you feel like you’ve found your quarterback, you stick with that feeling. I’m not talking about money or contracts, I just want to make the guy feel good, which makes me feel good, too. We’re a better team this year, expectations are rightfully going up. We have to live up to that now. “
