Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos is the latest potential buyer for the Washington Commanders. He has already toured the franchise’s stadium and training facility.
In the race to sell the Washington Commnanders, a new interested party is apparently entering the picture.
As reported by “ESPN”, Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos is said to be interested in buying the franchise and has already visited the stadium and training facility.
As a result, there are now three known interested buyers for the Commanders – the investor group led by Josh Harris, along with the owner of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, Tilman Fertitta, and Apostolopoulos. Possible offers from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have already been ruled out in advance.
Apostolopoulos is the founder of Six Ventures Inc, a private venture capital fund. The 63-year-old was born in Toronto, attended the renowned Harvard University and has been involved in a variety of philanthropic organisations for years.
The financial mogul also recently held talks to buy the Charlotte Hornets from Michael Jordan of the NBA, according to the report, but has since focused on the possibility of acquiring the Commanders.
Sale of Washington Commanders: League meeting to provide insight
The Commanders’ owners, Dan and Tanya Snyder, announced in November they were selling the team. Forbes estimated the franchise’s value at $5.6 billion.
With the NFL League meeting of the owners taking place this week in Phoenix, there is increased speculation about when a deal might be announced and whether there is now movement on the transaction.
Harris’ group was joined earlier this month by Mitchell Rales, a Washington-based billionaire who has a net worth of $5.5 billion, according to Forbes. Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Earvin “Magic” Johnson has also joined the Harris-led group, according to the report.
Johnson, who is also co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, was already part of the Harris group that unsuccessfully tried to acquire the Denver Broncos last summer. Harris already owns the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA and the New Jersey Devils in the NHL, among others.
