US football is mourning the death of Bud Grant. The former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings died on Saturday at the age of 95.
This was announced by his long-time club.
In 1969, Grant coached Minnesota to an NFL title and thus a berth in Super Bowl IV, where the team lost to Kansas City, however.
It was the last Super Bowl before the American Football League merged with the NFL and the modern era of professional American football (AFL) was ushered in.
Three losses in Super Bowl
Following that, Grant led the Vikings to the Super Bowl three more times, but lost each time to Miami (1973), Pittsburgh (1974) and Oakland (1976). He was the first coach to lose four Super Bowls.
To this day, the Vikings have yet to win a title.
Before his time in the NFL Grant was also active in the US professional league NBA. In 1950, the reserve player was part of the championship team of the Minneapolis Lakers.
In 1951 Grant ended his basketball career and began his second career with the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL as a defensive end and wide receiver.
