The Cleveland Browns have apparently decided to fire their safety John Johnson. But what exactly will the separation look like?
According to consistent media reports from the USA, the Cleveland Browns have decided to fire their safety John Johnson. The new NFL year officially begins in the league on 15 March 2023 – and it is precisely on this date that a line is to be drawn officially in the relationship between the safety and the Browns.
The Browns are currently over the salary cap for 2023, so it is clear that they want to save salary. In addition, Johnson could no longer perform as well as they hoped in 2021 when they brought him to Ohio. Johnson signed a three-year contract at the time.
If the Browns released him before June 1, 2023, there would be $12.6 million in “dead cap” on the books for that year. So, in principle, a trade by mid-March would be the best option for the Browns. However, it seems hard to get a good trade offer for Johnson.
