A play by Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick caused frustration among fantasy players and sports betting participants a fortnight ago. Head coach Mike Tomlin is now complaining about their influence.
Munich – It was actually a smart play: In Week 13, the Pittsburgh Steelers won 19-16 against the Atlanta Falcons. Just before the end of the game, Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick intercepted a pass from Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota deep in his own half.
Instead of running into the end zone for a defensive touchdown, however, Fitzpatrick ran out of bounds. Knowing full well that all his team would have to do in the aftermath was kneel down to make sure the Falcons didn’t touch the ball again.
Actually, Fitzpatrick had done everything right, or so one might have thought. But with his decision, the 26-year-old incurred the wrath of countless fantasy football players and sports betting participants. Many felt cheated out of a touchdown.
Tomlin gets upset with fantasy players
The noise surrounding the play was such that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has now been prompted to complain about the impact of fantasy football and gambling on the NFL.
“It’s ridiculous that we’re talking about anything other than winning. Whether or not you had the Steelers defense and lost fantasy points or were affected by that on a bet,” Tomlin said.
“Personally, I’m often saddened that watching players competing at the highest level, competing at the highest level of the game we all love, is influenced by fantasy teams and gambling. It’s really unfortunate at times,” the Head Coach continued.
In addition, Tomlin praised Fitzpatrick’s correct action in the situation raised, pointing out that the athlete should be praised for his selflessness rather than being upset about the lack of an unnecessary touchdown or the impact on a sports bet.
