The San Francisco 49ers are on a roll, with a win over the Seattle Seahawks giving head coach Kyle Shanahan the division title in the NFC West. How far can it go with the once again convincing rookie quarterback Brock Purdy?
Munich/Seattle – Brock Purdy delivers. And delivers. And delivers.
Just like last week, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback was one of the guarantors for the 21:13 victory. In the division duel with the Seattle Seahawks, the 22-year-old impressed with 217 passing yards and two touchdowns.
The rookie, who entered the NFL as “Mr. Irrelevant” with the last pick of this year’s draft, is developing more and more into “Mr. Relevant” after the loss of Jimmy Garoppolo. His success over Seattle advanced him to become the second playmaker in franchise history to win his first two starts in his first NFL season.
49ers: George Kittle with high praise for Brock Purdy
Purdy presented himself with nerves of steel against a Seahawks defence that was alert at the start but degraded as time went on. He stayed calm in the pocket, took his time for the second or third read and placed his balls precisely. Once he was lucky that the egg didn’t stick to the hands of Seattle safety Quandre Diggs – otherwise he acted without any big mistakes.
“What Brock’s done since he’s come here: he’s come in the preseason, he’s shaken up the best defence in the NFL. He came into preseason games, threaded balls and had the confidence since he walked into this building. He was just waiting for a chance,” George Kittle praised afterwards on “Amazon Prime Video. “
Of course, it’s not just because of the 49ers’ nominal third-string quarterback that his team’s division title, and thus playoff berth, is no longer up for grabs. Besides the defence with the once again strong Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, running back Christian McCaffrey (138 scrimmage yards, one touchdown) and Kittle also contributed to the success.
49ers: Kyle Shanahan sets sights on playoffs
There’s no question that Purdy has gifted playmakers in McCaffrey, who has played a key role in the offense since his arrival, Kittle and wide receivers Brandon Ayiuk and the currently injured Deebo Samuel. But the fact that he is also putting them in the limelight in the way he has been doing for almost two weeks is by no means a matter of course – especially considering that he went into the game against Seattle with a rib injury.
“Under the circumstances we had no other choice, we wanted to see how long he could last and we were also prepared to play with Josh Johnson. But he just got comfortable, he got better and better as the game went on and it was pretty incredible,” Head Coach Kyle Shanahan stated after the game, adding, “The team had a lot of respect for him before the game, but even more so now. “
And so it’s no coincidence that the 49ers are now on seven straight wins and have a real chance to make a deep run in the playoffs as well. “We’re not there yet. I’m very proud of our team and what we’ve accomplished so far,” Shanahan said.
While there are still three regular-season games to go, the focus is naturally already on the playoffs. And a lot seems possible there – also because Purdy simply delivers.
