DeMeco Ryans, defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, is probably about to take a big leap in his NFL career. Apparently, the 38-year-old is a candidate to become a head coach.
Munich – Exciting weeks for DeMeco Ryans: While his San Francisco 49ers are fighting for a playoff spot in the final weeks of the regular season, the defensive coordinator is hoping for a job as head coach with an NFL team next year. NFL insider Adam Schefter reports that the 38-year-old is a promising candidate for such a position.
His best chances at the moment would be with the Indianapolis Colts and the Carolina Panthers, who will be looking for a new head coach after the season. However, the Houston Texans, Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals could also soon become a destination for Ryans – depending on how the rest of the season goes.
San Francisco 49ers: Another bloodletting?
If Ryans does indeed move up to head coach for the new season, the 49ers would lose a staff member for a third straight year who gets to take over the head job with another team. That was most recently the case with Mike McDaniel (2022 to the Dolphins) and Robert Saleh (2021 to the Jets).
Last year, Ryans already had hopes of being hired as head coach, but dropped out during the application process with the Las Vegas Raiders and the Minnesota Vikings. Now it looks like he will get another chance.
