Former head coach Sean Payton surprisingly resigned from his longtime post with the New Orleans Saints in the offseason. According to reports, however, that was not the end of his career. The 58-year-old appears to have three places to go for a possible comeback.
Munich – Sean Payton’s resignation as head coach of the New Orleans Saints was a big surprise this offseason. But the move should not mean an absolute end to his career. Many expect the 58-year-old to be back on the sidelines in the 2023 season.
According to the Miami Herald, there are even three concrete places for Payton to go. The Miami Dolphins, the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly the preferred destinations for the long-time head coach. However, as reported by the paper, Payton does not want to actively approach a team that has filled the head coaching vacancy.
Interest from Dallas Cowboys?
As of now, the three supposed starting jobs for Payton are filled anyway. The Dolphins have a new head coach in Mike Daniels, the Chargers have Brandon Staley in confidence and the Cowboys have Mike McCarthy entering his third year in Dallas.
Payton has often been linked to “America’s Team”, and owner Jerry Jones has also shown himself to be a fan of the 58-year-old. In an interview with “The Athletic” in June, he praised the coach, but at the same time made it clear that he currently stands by McCarthy: “It’s not fair that a Sean Payton is out of a job, it shouldn’t be. We’re good friends and I think a lot of him as a coach, but at the moment there’s no discussion about that post with us. “
With 15 years of experience as the Saints’ head coach, a 152-89 record and a 2010 Super Bowl win, Payton should probably be a candidate for many teams if he does indeed return to the NFL.
