Star quarterback Russell Wilson is expected to lead the Denver Broncos back to winning ways. To ensure that nothing goes wrong in this endeavour, head coach Nathaniel Hackett wants to provide the 33-year-old with a perfect offence.

Denver/Munich – A new era has begun for the Denver Broncos.

With the trade for star quarterback Russell Wilson, the Colorado franchise has moved into the circle of Super Bowl favourites.

To ultimately achieve that goal, the entire offense will be tailored to the former Seahawks star.

“Once we get to know him and understand him, we’ll build around him,” new Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett promised Denver television reporter Mike Klis.

And further, “What exactly will it look like? It will be entirely up to Russell, and what he likes. “

Russell Wilson in Seattle: Mostly “old-school” offense

The head coach’s clear commitment should surprise few, after all, you don’t trade five draft picks (including two first-round picks) and three players for a quarterback and then force an unfamiliar system of play on him.

But Hackett chose his words wisely. Wilson had repeatedly indicated dissatisfaction with Seattle’s system of play under head coach Pete Carroll in the recent past.

Carroll, an old-school football coach, always emphasised a solid running game that was established as early in the game as possible. The offence was complemented by a strong defence, in Seattle’s case the “Legion of Boom” around Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas took over this role.

The popular term “Let Russ Cook” only developed from 2020 onwards, when the offence was almost completely put in the hands of Russell Wilson. Even without great success, the stats during that period were in favour of Wilson and the offensive system.

So now it’s up to Hackett to get Chef Russell cooking in the Rockies.

As offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers, he “directed” Aaron Rodgers to back-to-back MVP titles, so some quality is there.

Speaking of quality: With receivers Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick and the speedy Jerry Jeudy, Wilson has outstanding playmakers in Denver. Add to that running back Javonte Williams and one of the league’s best offensive lines.

The ingredients are on the table – if the cookbook fits, the Broncos could finally reach the heights again this year.
