Everything is new with the Washington Commanders: After rebranding, the franchise plans to build a new stadium by 2027. Various politicians seem to want to help with that.
Munich/Washington, DC – The Washington Commanders want to build a new stadium. Currently, the NFL franchise from the US capital plays its games at Fed Ex Field in the neighbouring state of Maryland.
The stadium has been home to the franchise since 1997. The lease for the Washington Commanders’ current arena runs for another five years. A new stadium will be built by then, Commanders president Jason Wright recently confirmed: “We will play in a new arena by 2027. “
That’s why the Commanders have toured the new buildings of league rivals in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, for example, and are planning a fully covered stadium that is expected to cost around three billion US dollars.
Possible sites include Virginia and Washington D.C.
Where the new building will be constructed is not yet clear. However, both the Democratic mayor of Washington D.C. and the Republican House of Delegates of the neighbouring state of Virginia have already expressed interest. Mayor Muriel Bowser wrote in a statement on Twitter, “The next chapter for Washington Commanders should be victorious, right here in DC.”
From Virginia, the Washington Post reports that the House of Delegates is planning to create an authority called the football stadium authority. It could sell bonds to raise up to $1 billion of the estimated $3 billion price tag to help finance construction.
Both houses of the state legislature and Governor Glenn Youngkin would have to approve the necessary legislation.
