The players of the NFL can look forward to increasing income. The salary cap will be raised for the 2022 season.
Munich – NFL teams will be allowed to spend a little more money on player salaries again in 2022.
The NFL’s salary cap for will increase to 208.2 million US dollars. This corresponds to an increase of 25.7 million dollars compared to the current season. This is the maximum amount that the NFL and the NFL Players Association agreed on in May.
Pandemic caused salary cap to drop recently
The sharp increase is due to a lower cap for 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The previous cap in 2020 was $198.2 million. Because teams played in front of reduced or no crowds last season, the cap for 2021 was adjusted accordingly and reduced to $182.5 million. This was the lowest mark since 2018.
This required teams to get a little creative to meet the salary cap. Some veteran free agents preferred one-year contracts to better take advantage of the expanded cap for 2022.
Until the pandemic, the NFL salary cap had seen steady annual increases in the $10 million to $12 million per year range in recent years.
