The kicker of the New York Giants has accused his ex-team Carolina Panthers, more precisely the medical department there and the trainers of a momentous misdiagnosis. In an interview with The Athletic, the 34-year-old said the 2018 diagnosis was “100 percent” wrong and not only cost him his 2019 season but also jeopardised his career.

“I was initially told it was tendonitis and a bone bruise, but it was actually much more and we knew that. I was treated and when I returned I was still dealing with the same injury – even worse than before,” the kicker explained. “It was a mess. “

Gano accuses Panthers of misdiagnosis

According to Gano, the injury referred to had been a fractured thigh in his left leg, the stance leg while kicking. So, according to his own account, he played with the fracture for one game before being placed on the Injured Reserved List.

His situation didn’t get any better, though. “I went to training camp the next year, they told me everything was fine. But that was clearly not the case. So I had an operation,” Gano continued.

Subsequently, the athlete missed the 2019 season, a circumstance the 34-year-old believes would not have happened had the people in charge at the Panthers diagnosed it correctly.

Team coach implicated in scandal

Athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion and the medical staff have left Carolina after the 2019 season to join head coach Ron Rivera at the Washington football team. Vermillion has since been relieved of his duties there on suspicion of passing prescription drugs without authorization. Team doctor Pat Connor has resigned.

The Carolina Panthers would not comment on the allegations made by their former kicker, with head coach Matt Rhule stating only that Gano was an “incredible person.”

The current Giants pro was released in 2020 for financial reasons.
