Las Vegas Raiders – Fernando Mendoza Will Have to Wait for His NFL Debut: “He Has to Earn His Chance”

The Las Vegas Raiders have opted for the experienced option at quarterback. As a result, No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza will have to be patient.

The Las Vegas Raiders have made their decision—and opted for the experienced option at quarterback. Kirk Cousins will take over as the starter starting in Week 1 of the new season.

This means No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza will have to be patient and wait for his chance. He showed glimpses of his potential during the preseason, but also had his ups and downs. Even so, he generally made a good impression.

General Manager John Spytek therefore had plenty of praise for the rookie, especially for his attitude and work ethic.

Raiders: High Praise for Fernando Mendoza

“He works tirelessly. He loves football. He loves his teammates. On the field, he’s full of energy. He’s self-critical and has a very good sense of his own abilities. And he’s very precise,” said Spytek.

He also announced: “His time will come, but he has to earn his chance every single day—and he knows that. I think we’re all very pleased with him as a person, with his work ethic, and with his ambition to become a great quarterback.”

According to Spytek, the team is trying to put together the best possible roster and field the players who are most ready. “There should always be competition at every position—not just at quarterback, but at every position. The expectation will always be that the best player plays: the one who has earned it and who can best fulfill his role for the team.”
