NBA: Anthony Edwards considers move to the NFL

Although Anthony Edwards is a superstar in the NBA, he is considering leaving the league. The guard would apparently like to try his hand at the NFL.

Despite his young age of 24, Anthony Edwards is one of the best players in the NBA. The Minnesota Timberwolves star is the league’s third-best scorer behind Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with 29.6 points per game.

However, Edwards is apparently not only a talented basketball player, but has also been enthusiastic about football since childhood. The American has repeatedly hinted that he could well imagine a life as a professional football player.

NBA: Edwards wants to win the title first

But Edwards has one important thing to do first. “First of all, I have to find a way to win the NBA title,” Edwards said in a livestream.

Although the Timberwolves have made it to the Western Conference Finals in the past two years, that’s where their run ended each time. The franchise is currently in fourth place and well on its way to the playoffs. Winning the title is certainly not out of the question in the short or medium term. “Once that’s done, a switch would be cool. Then I’ll play football, especially while I’m still young. If I win a championship before my 30th birthday, I’ll definitely give it a shot,” he announced. That leaves six years.

Edwards was considered a talented running back

Of course, one has to ask whether Edwards’ statements are just talk or whether he really can imagine a transfer. What is clear is that he was already used as a running back and occasionally as a quarterback or cornerback in his childhood and was one of the most talented players of his age before he took up basketball.

He could certainly bring his tremendous athleticism, which also makes him strong in the NBA, to the NFL. If the move works out, he would see himself in a different role than he had in his childhood.

“I would probably play receiver. But I could also try my hand at backup QB, because then I wouldn’t have to play as long as the starter didn’t get injured,” he explained. From NBA ace to backup QB? It sounds a little strange, especially since he is apparently also considering sitting on the bench.

Switching to the NFL would be a tough challenge

There are certainly numerous reasons against an NFL career. For one thing, there is his lucrative contract with the Timberwolves, which runs until 2029. As a career changer, he would not have similar conditions in the NFL, either athletically or financially.

In addition, it should be noted that it is extremely difficult to fight your way into the NFL anyway due to the abundance of talent. An athlete who has devoted himself to a completely different sport in recent years is likely to have a hard time. So why should Edwards risk potentially failing?

Despite the many arguments against it, however, it cannot be ruled out that the NBA star will surprise everyone in the end.
