NFL – Amon-Ra St. Brown regrets David Montgomery trade: “One of my favorite teammates”

The Detroit Lions have traded running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans. Amon-Ra St. Brown was not happy about this move.

After three years, running back David Montgomery’s time with the Detroit Lions NFL team has come to an end. The Lions traded the 28-year-old to the Houston Texans, who put a lot on the table for the deal. Among other things, a fifth-round pick in 2026 and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs moved to Detroit.

Although Montgomery was clearly second behind Jahmyr Gibbs at the Lions last season, he still racked up 716 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. And one Lions player in particular is sad to see the offensive player leave: Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The wide receiver admitted in a podcast with his brother EQ that the trade had affected him. “I’m angry. Selfishly speaking, I’m angry because I love D-Mo,” St. Brown said.

St. Brown praises Montgomery: “Always focused on the team”

The German-American particularly appreciated Montgomery’s handling of his difficult situation. “He was one of my favorite teammates, no matter what the situation was. We knew he wanted more playing time and to play more. He never made it personal. He was always focused on the team, which is sometimes difficult, especially in his position,” said the pass receiver.

St. Brown has no doubts about his former teammate’s athletic ability. “He’s a number one back on 31 other teams,” St. Brown is convinced. He would have had the quality to do the same with the Lions. “But the thing was, we had two guys, two really good running backs, and only one can play. That was a shame,” he said.

Although St. Brown regrets Montgomery’s departure, he is nevertheless happy that he is now joining a team where he should be the clear starter. “I know how much he wanted to play a bigger role in an offense. And I think he’ll get that in Houston,” believes the three-time All-Pro.
