NFL: Cleveland Browns in quarterback turmoil – Shedeur Sanders out with injury

The Cleveland Browns currently have six quarterbacks under contract. Four of them are dealing with injuries – most recently Shedeur Sanders

Shedeur Sanders was one of the big winners of Week 1 of the preseason.

The Cleveland Browns’ high-profile rookie, who surprisingly fell to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, was the starting quarterback in the 30-10 win over the Carolina Panthers. He completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and threw two touchdown passes.

In the second preseason game on Saturday against the Philadelphia Eagles, Dillon Gabriel was supposed to get his chance as the starter. The former Oregon quarterback is not nearly as famous as Sanders, but he was selected in the third round and thus much earlier.

The only problem is that Gabriel is struggling with a thigh injury. His availability is very questionable. And Kenny Pickett, who has plenty of experience as the former starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is also struggling with a thigh injury. Both are training on a limited basis.

“When you’re young, you have that competition in the quarterback room and you can’t be on the field every day, it’s tough,” head coach Kevin Stefanski knows.

According to the coach, Sanders would start again against the Eagles if Gabriel and Pickett are unable to play this weekend.

The only problem is that Sanders is not fit either.

When the Browns held a joint training session with the Eagles on Wednesday, Sanders got very few plays and was rested afterwards.

The explanation: the passer pulled a muscle while throwing right at the start of practice. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, it is unlikely that he will play against the Eagles.

This is not his first injury. Sanders was already suffering from pain in his arm at the start of training camp.

Joe Flacco: 40 years old and in top shape

Unbelievable but true: at 40 years of age, Joe Flacco is the healthiest quarterback in Cleveland so far this training camp. Deshaun Watson will be out for even longer due to a torn Achilles tendon.

Last week, the Browns signed Tyler Huntley. He also played in the first preseason game, completing six of eight passes for 51 yards and one touchdown.

This means that the Browns currently have six quarterbacks on their roster—and only two of them are fit as of today.
