NFL – San Francisco 49ers: Nick Bosa crashes MAGA cap interview – now facing trouble

49ers star Nick Bosa expresses his political views after beating the Cowboys – and could get in trouble for it.

Political statement from Nick Bosa. The San Francisco 49ers defensive end crashed an interview with his quarterback Brock Purdy to present viewers of the US channel NBC with a white and gold cap with the inscription “MAGA – Make America Great Again”, Donald Trump’s election slogan.

After the Niners’ 30-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys, playmaker Purdy was interviewed by NBC reporter Melissa Stark. The signal caller was flanked by teammates George Kittle and Isaac Guerendo.

Bosa then stormed into the interview, stood behind Purdy and pointed to his cap without saying anything, before jogging off. At the post-game press conference, he commented, “I’m not going to talk about it too much, but I think it’s an important time.”

Bosa has been an avowed Republican for years. Even before his 2014 draft, he had to delete conservative tweets from his Twitter account. He also supported Donald Trump in 2016 when the then-49ers quarterback called Colin Kaepernick, who was campaigning against racism, a “clown”.

So far, there has been little direct support from NFL players in the current US election campaign. Only Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has positioned himself pro-Trump, and Eagles lineman Thomas Booker IV pro-Kamala Harris.

Even though Bosa didn’t say anything during the Purdy interview, he could now be in trouble. The NFL does not allow players to make political gestures or statements during games.

The rulebook states: “The league will not grant any team or player permission to wear, display or otherwise convey messages through helmet decals, wristbands, jersey patches, mouthpieces or other items.”
