Every year, selected NFL teams receive additional picks before the draft, so-called compensatory picks. Now the exact picks for the 2024 draft have been determined

The Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers can each look forward to five additional picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. This is according to the list of so-called compensatory picks, which was published on Friday.

A total of 34 additional draft picks were distributed to 14 teams. Four picks can be used in round three, three are earmarked for round four and there are nine additional picks in round five. Most of the compensatory picks are in the sixth round (13), five more were distributed to the seventh and final round of the draft.

With compensatory picks, the NFL wants to favor teams that lost a particularly high number of high-quality players in the previous year’s free agency or that had to cope with a bloodletting in important positions in the coaching staff or front office. For example, due to the departure of coordinators who were poached by other teams as head coaches.

According to the rules for compensatory draft picks, a team that loses more or better compensatory free agents (CFA) than it acquired in the previous offseason is entitled to receive compensatory draft picks.

The amount of compensation for free agents is determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and success in the previous season. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent a club loses or signs is covered by this formula.

Teams that suffered a net loss of CFAs in the previous contract period are eligible to receive a corresponding number of compensatory picks. No team can receive more than four compensatory picks through this process.

However, there are additional picks that can be awarded. This is the case if an employee of the former employer team is a minority and was hired by another franchise as head coach or top football executive (general manager).

For the 49ers, this was the case for DeMeco Ryans, who went to the Houston Texans, which is why San Francisco ends up with five picks. The Rams received an additional pick because their former defensive coordinator Raheem Morris was hired by the Falcons as head coach.
