New Orleans Saints: Quarterback diagnosed with rare form of cancer

Bad diagnosis for Saints quarterback Jake Haener. The 25-year-old has been diagnosed with cancer

Bad news from Jake Haener. The New Orleans Saints quarterback has announced that he has been diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer. The playmaker revealed his ailment after being approached at training camp about a circular adhesive bandage on his right cheek.

The 25-year-old would not give an exact diagnosis, but said he found out just over a week ago that he had a rare form of skin cancer, especially for his age.

“It just popped up and I was worried about it. So was my family. It was like a bump,” explained the signal caller, who consulted a dermatologist after the discovery. The dermatologist removed the affected area and the subsequent biopsy revealed the cancer diagnosis.

Haener, who participated in the first practices of the season on the University of California campus, said he doesn’t know how his diagnosis will affect his football schedule.

So an appointment is scheduled for Aug. 1, when doctors will decide how to proceed with treatment. “When something like this comes up, you have to take care of it,” said the athlete. “My family has been great. The coaching team took fantastic care of me.”

As for the future, Haener, who was drafted in 2023 and serves as Derek Carr’s backup, remains positive: “Mentally, I’m fine. It’s just something I have to take care of and take the necessary steps. I want to be responsible with it and not let it distract me because I’ll be fine…. I don’t want to wait too long with something like this. I want to get a handle on it. “
