NFL: Saturday games – Why are they played three times?

Normally, Sunday in particular is all about the NFL. However, this week there are also three games on Saturday. Why?

A large part of the 2023 regular season is over. With the San Francisco 49ers, the first playoff participant has already been determined, others could follow in week 15.

In addition to the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles, who faced each other head-to-head last week, this also includes the Baltimore Ravens.

The Detroit Lions, on the other hand, will have to wait at least another week, but are currently right on course. A win on Saturday night against the Denver Broncos would be hugely important if they are to stay on course.

On Saturday night? Yes, you read that right. And the Lions’ clash with the Broncos is just one of three games that will be played on December 16. Strictly speaking, the game will of course take place on Sunday in Germany, but in the USA it will still be Saturday.

Before that, the Minnesota Vikings and the Cincinnati Bengals as well as the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Indianapolis Colts will face each other. But why?

NFL games on Saturday are basically nothing new

It happens time and again that games are also played on a Saturday during the regular season.

In the next three game weeks, matches will also be played on Saturdays. However, this is the first time since 1978 that NFL games have been scheduled on four different Saturdays within a season.

Why aren’t there NFL games every Saturday?

Because that day is usually reserved for college football. But the season is mostly over, there are only a few bowl games left this week, but they’re not expected to get as much coverage.

Why are there three NFL games this Saturday?

The reason is clear. By postponing the games, the NFL generates additional revenue through advertising and doesn’t get in the way of Sunday’s games.
