After Gruden scandal: Players’ union NFLPA demands NFL to release 650,000 emails

After the publication of numerous racist and homophobic emails led to the resignation of Jon Gruden, the players’ union “NFLPA” requests the release of further documents. However, the NFL remains stubborn.

Washington/Munich – For several months, the NFL conducted an investigation against the Washington football team.

It was about bullying, sexual abuse and misconduct in the workplace. After the conclusion in July, the league punished the franchise with a fine of ten million US dollars.

Details remained hidden from the public – until the Jon Gruden case.

As part of the investigation, numerous emails were “leaked” in which the ex-coach of the Las Vegas Raiders uses homophobic and racist language.

NFL continues to refuse

Notwithstanding, the NFL refuses to release the rest of the approximately 650,000 emails. The players’ union NFLPA now wants to take action against this.

As executive director DeMaurice Smith told USA Today, the NFLPA is now officially asking the league to “release the rest of the emails”. The same goes for lawyers representing some 40 former Washington football team employees.

Lawyers find clear words

“It is truly outrageous that after a ten-month investigation by the NFL, involving hundreds of witnesses and 650,000 documents, the only person who will be held accountable and lose his job is the coach of the Las Vegas Raiders,” lawyers Lisa Banks and Debra Katz said in a statement.

It goes on to say, “If the NFL deems it appropriate to release these offending emails from Jon Gruden obtained as part of its investigation into the Washington football team, it must also release the findings related to the real target of this investigation.”

But the NFL already expressed to The Washington Post that it “does not intend” to release the material.
