Accidental death of Dwayne Haskins: Partial settlement reached in legal dispute

In April 2022, Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins dies in an accident. A partial settlement is now reached in the legal battle.

There is a partial settlement in the Dwayne Haskins case. The former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback died in a crash with a dump truck in Florida on April 9, 2022. Now his survivors have reached a settlement with the driver and the owner of the truck, “ESPN” reports, citing the lawyer of widow Kalabrya Haskins.

A lawsuit filed in March alleged that the truck driver was speeding and driving carelessly, and that the load exceeded the legal weight limit. Among others, the lawsuit is filed against the Florida Department of Transportation and the company responsible for the signage along the highway.

Haskins had been on his way back from training sessions with teammates when he was hit by the truck. According to Rick Ellsley, attorney for the widow, settlements have been reached with “various parties” while other defendants continue to be tried.

The lawsuit further alleges that Haskins was the target of an “extortion and robbery conspiracy” and was drugged before his death. Among others, two restaurants, a golf course and a hotel are named as being involved in the same conspiracy.

Haskins intoxicated in accident

According to the toxicology report, Haskins was intoxicated before the fatal accident and had drugs in his blood that are used as anaesthetics among professionals but are also used recreationally.

Haskins had been drafted in the first round by the Washington Commanders, then Redskins, in 2019, moving to the Steelers in 2021.
