It seems that the Jacksonville Jaguars’ house is still in a mess. After the farce about the scandalous video of head coach Urban Meyer, the Jaguars have suffered another defeat. While the coach is trying to explain the situation, his quarterback is publicly dissing him.
Munich – The scandalous video of Jaguars coach Urban Meyer has barely been forgotten and the next trouble spot has arisen in Jacksonville.
After the 19:37 defeat against the Tennessee Titans, the nerves of the players are on edge. Because little progress can be seen despite the low expectations, the role of head coach Urban Meyer is also coming under increasing scrutiny. Five defeats in the first five games speak for themselves.
The criticism that he is not using quarterback jewel Trevor Lawrence in the best possible way and can only rarely put him in the limelight is becoming louder and louder as a result of the poor record. A dispute between coach and player after the game points in a similar direction.
Disputed play call on 4th down
At the 19:31 mark, the Jacksonville Jaguars were at the Titans’ one-yard line with the ball inches from the end zone. On the third try earlier, Lawrence stretched supposedly for a touchdown, but the referees took the decision back on the field. With only ten minutes left to play, the Jaguars also played out the fourth try.
To the surprise of many, however, Urban Meyer refrained from running a quarterback sneak, which in most cases is successful from such close range. Instead, back-up running back Carlos Hyde ran into the Titans’ defensive wall and was pounded into the ground three yards behind the line of scrimmage.
Lawrence contradicts Meyer
“He’s not comfortable with it yet,” Urban Meyer said after the game, explaining why he didn’t specify a quarterback sneak as a play. “It might sound silly, but if you’ve never done it before, we’ve got to keep working on it so we can make that call at some point,” the 57-year-old said.
Meyer faced headwind here not only from Jaguars fans on social media, but also from his own playmaker: “That’s not true, I’m very comfortable with it. I obviously haven’t made a quarterback sneak in an NFL game, but I feel good about it. We could make that call in any situation,” the number one pick continued.
It’s not the first time perceptions have varied between player and coach in Jacksonville under Urban Meyer. Already after the latter’s apology for the controversial video, Meyer earned criticism from the team. It remains to be seen how big the officials will allow the rift between team and coach to grow.
