NFL – Charges against Tyreek Hill: speeding, reckless and not wearing a seat belt

Before the Miami Dolphins game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tyreek Hill was arrested. After the game, the superstar hints at bad things to come. The police and the Dolphins also speak out

Before the Miami Dolphins’ NFL opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars (20:17), there were crazy scenes involving star receiver Tyreek Hill. The Dolphins player was arrested by the police on his way to the stadium.

For “Cheetah”, the actions of the officers during the traffic stop are more than just incomprehensible. Hill hints at the worst to “CNN”: “I don’t like to talk like this, but it’s true, if I wasn’t an NFL star in the worst case scenario, the article headlines might look a little different. Tyreek Hill gets shot outside Hard Rock Stadium or something. It’s crazy.”

From the traffic tickets published by “ESPN,” it appears that Hill was pulled over for “reckless driving” and for “seat belt violation.” According to the report, Hill was traveling at around 60 miles per hour, the equivalent of around 96 km/h, which is based on a “visual estimate”.

In residential areas in Miami, the speed limit is 30 miles per hour. This is only raised to 70 miles per hour when entering the highway.

Additional information: Reckless driving costs 179 dollars, while a seatbelt violation costs 129 dollars.

Tyreek Hill had “no idea ”

Immediately after the match, he told US reporters that the police had told him that he had been driving “too fast” and “recklessly”. However, he himself had “no idea” why he was detained in the first place.

“I really have no idea. It wasn’t disrespectful because my mother didn’t bring me up that way. She didn’t swear. None of that stuff. I’m still trying to figure that out. … I still don’t know what happened,” said the passport recipient.

He continued, “But I want to use this platform to say, ‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? Worst case scenario? It’s crazy. I want to be a cop one day. […] So I have a lot of respect for police officers. But obviously there’s some bad apples with everybody. … I want to use this platform to find a way to turn this around for the better.”

NFL: Dolphins make statement

The Miami Dolphins have criticized the conduct of police officers during the traffic stop as disproportionately harsh. “We are saddened by the overly aggressive and violent behavior of the police officers,” the franchise’s statement read, ‘It is both infuriating and heartbreaking to see the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary force and hostility toward these players. ’

Police had previously released video footage from bodycams of the checkpoint. It shows Hill sitting in his black sports car, talking to a police officer through the window. The door of his car is then pulled open, the professional footballer is dragged out and pinned down on the ground by several officers. “I still don’t know what happened,” Hill said after the NFL opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars (20-17) and criticized: ”What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? God knows what those guys would have done.”

The Dolphins wrote in their statement that this was “a reminder” that not every situation like this ends peacefully, and we are thankful that it did in this one.”

There are “some officers who confuse their responsibility and dedication with misguided power,” the statement continued: “We commend the MDPD (Miami Dade Police Department, ed.) for taking the proper and necessary action and releasing this footage so quickly, but also urge them to take equally swift and decisive action against the officers who behaved so abhorrently. ”

Police also speak out

The police department itself has now issued a statement to explain the events surrounding Hill’s temporary detention.

According to the statement, Hill was handcuffed to ensure the safety of the officers. “To be clear, he was never arrested. He was detained to ensure officer safety because he had previously driven in a manner that put himself and others at great risk,” Steadman Stahl, president of the South Florida Police Association, was quoted as saying.

According to the report, the Dolphins star was “not immediately cooperative”. In addition, he had refused to sit on the ground after being handcuffed, which is why he was held on the ground. According to the police, the situation was resolved within a few minutes, Hill received two tickets and was released.

Police officer temporarily suspended

Stephanie V. Daniels, the director of the responsible authority in Miami, had previously announced in a statement: “Following the incident with Tyreek Hill, I initiated an internal investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter. One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave for the duration of the investigation. I am committed to transparency and accountability to the community in any situation involving my officers.”

In turn, when Hill was informed of this, he replied, “That should tell you all you need to know. I’m just glad my teammates were there to support me in that situation.”

Incidentally, the brief detention did not change his performance. Hill had seven receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown in the 20-17 win over the Jaguars. The latter was an impressive 80-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
